The western grebe is the largest grebe in North America. They breed on freshwater wetlands in the western half of North America. In the winter they typically migrate to the coastal waters of the west coast of North America. They are fish eaters that usually catch their prey by diving under the water. I photographed this grebe at the Bosque del Apache in New Mexico last November.

ReplyDeleteGreat shot! I'll bet one of these birds can put a hurt on a fishing hole. Interesting how so many birds filter down through the center of the continent before filtering either to one coast or the other. You certainly live in a great area.

ReplyDeleteNice blog and great shots! I initially noticed your "grebe vs fish" shot.... nice! Wow, that looks like a pretty big fish the bird has caught, but the potential meal doesn't look too happy either!
ReplyDeleteSo could the grebe really manage to fully consume that formidable-looking fish okay?? Does the fish put up a good fight, if somehow eaten, does the unlucky prey get swallowed wriggling all the way as well?!
