The great horned owl is a large owl that is found in North, Central, and South America. It is the second largest owl in the Americas, with only the snowy owl weighing slightly more. Like most owls they are year round residents in their territory. Since they eat a wide variety of prey, including rodents and other small to medium sized mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and large insects. They frequently will take on prey that is two to three times there weight, including skunk which are also crepuscular, active at dusk and dawn. This has earned them the nickname, "Tiger of the sky". This name is often also used in reference to their larger Eurasian relative the Eurasian eagle owl.
