Yellowstone is a world of contradictions. This is very evident at the West Thumb Geyser Basin. At an elevation of around 7,800 feet above see level Yellowstone Lake is frozen through out a good portion of the year. At the West Thumb however, heated water and steam from the geyser basin mingle help to keep the shore line thawed.
