Eared Grebe

Eared Grebe
As children many of us heard the story about the ugly duckling that grew into a beautiful swan. I think that the eared grebe would have been a better star for the story then the swan. The eared grebe spends about half of the year in its grey, bland plumage but during breeding season they become spectacular.

Interesting looking bird, but as you say, perhaps a bit on the ugly side at this point in the tale.
