Western Grebe

Western Grebe
Even though the western grebe is not as fancy and colorful as the eared or horned grebes I have always found them to be a handsome and fascinating bird. I like the contrast between black and white it makes them look clean. Then add the bright red eye for a splash of color. We saw a lot of western grebes at Medicine  Lake National Wildlife Refuge on our way back from Yellowstone. We have seen them at Medicine Lake before on past trips but it has always been just one or two and at a distance. This year they were quit numerous and not afraid to come close to the road.

Wonderful looking bird! (I find red eyes in birds a little freaky though.)

Nice shot of the grebe and its distinctive head pattern.
