Gray Comma

The comma butterfly is so named because of the small white dash which appears on the wing that resembles a punctuation mark. There are several different comma butterflies that we see here each one having a slightly different mark.
I believe that this is a sample of the gray comma which is pretty common in the northern portions of the United States and southern Canada. I photographed this at the Carpenter Nature Center.
