Lythrum salicaria

People love flowers because of their fragrance and their beauty but flowers are an integral part of the web of life here on planet earth. It is the fragrance and beauty of the flowers that draw in the insects in search of nectar They in turn carry the pollen from flower to flower pollinating the plants which produces new seeds that help the plants to propagate. The plants help to maintain the balance of life converting carbon dioxide into the oxygen which we all breathe.
This is the flower of the Lythrum salicaria or purple loosestrife. It is considered a noxious weed here where I live. It is very good at propagating, one plant can produce over a million seeds, and often crowds out native plants. It was originally a native of Eurasia but I photographed this plant at Purgatory Creek.

Great post. I have not seen this flower in India, although I have lived in different parts of India.

Too bad about how many seeds it produces, but the bees have certainly taken to purple loosestrife! And the sight of a great swathe of it is beautiful!
