Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Yellow-crowned Night Heron
The yellow-crowned night heron is a small heron that is found in wetland areas of North, South, and Central America. Yellow-crowned night herons living in tropical and semi tropical areas, like south Florida, Caribbean, Central America and northern South America, stay on their breeding range all year long. Herons that breed in the eastern United States migrate south during the winter. Yellow-crowned night herons eat primarily crustaceans. They usually hunt at night, thus their name, slowly stalking their prey by wading through the water and then lunging to grab it with their beak. Here in Minnesota we see black-crowned night herons that breed in small rookeries. Usually yellow-crowned night herons do not come this far north but every once in a while a yellow-crowned is found mixed in with it's black-crowned relatives.

This heron seems to be not quite so sleek as other varieties of herons! But love the colour tones of the feathers! Beautiful photo!
