Ruby-crowned kinglet at Wood Lake Nature Center

Here are some pictures of a ruby-crowned kinglet that I took last Wednesday. It was in a small tree with a yellow-rumped warbler at Wood Lake Nature Center.

Since I am not a birding genius, not yet at least, I was not sure on the ID.

I had it in my mind that it was a warbler, since I have been seeing lots of warblers coming through on the fall migration lately.

This post was originally a request for help in coming up with an ID.

John, at A DC Birding Blog was kind enough to help me out and point out that this was actually a ruby-crowned kinglet and not a warbler. Because of helpful readers like John I learn more about birding all the time. Thanks for the help John.

What you have is not a warbler, but a ruby-crowned kinglet. It's an easy mistake to make.

Kinglets are highly active (more active, even, than warblers). They frequently hover to pick insects out of the air or off leaves.

Thanks John. I have been photographing wildlife for about 8 years now but most of the birds that I photographed were raptors, up until recently. I am still trying to learn many of the smaller birds and I had warblers in my mind and so I did not even think to look at kinglets. That's the great thing about bird blogging not only do you get to share it also helps you learn.
