Tribute to Misty

Today was a rough day. Today we had to let go of our two year old little girl named Misty.

Misty developed an unknown illness over the past few months. She had lost half of he weight and was down to about three and a half pounds. She spent most of her time sleeping and was beginning to have a hard time walking and using the litter box.
Several trips to the vet and numerous test revealed nothing. Today we were scheduled to bring her in for an exploratory surgery. Unfortunately they determined that she was anemic and would require a blood transfusion before they could move forward. Things did not look good. We were facing over a couple of thousand dollars worth of vets bills and they still had no idea what was wrong. Worse yet there were doubts that she was strong enough to make it through any surgery. So we made the hard decision and ended her pain. We only had her a couple of years but she was a very special little girl and I will miss her. Tomorrow we will head out to the shelter to see if we can find a new family member to share our life with. Nothing will replace Misty in our hearts but giving an unfortunate cat a new home and family will help to ease the pain a little and help our little boy feel less lonely.

Camera Critters: A New Member of the Family

Today's edition of Camera Critters is a bit late but there is a very good reason. Today Michelle and I have adapted a new little boy.
Let me introduce everyone to our new son, Magic. Magic is a 3 month old kitten that we just adopted from a rescue shelter. We know have 2 cats, Magic and Misty, both were adoptions.
Magic has a very different personality from Misty. Misty has always been a very shy and reserved cat. When we first brought her home she spent a lot of time during her first few days with us hiding under the furniture. She has gotten used to us over the 9 months or so that she has been with us but she is still some what inhibited. Magic went exploring the moment we walked in the door. Even with Misty following him around, she is over a year old so even though she is a small cat she is much larger then Magic, and giving him an occasional territorial hiss he still was not phased.
What did Misty think of the new kitten? She was a bit nervous around him but she has been getting better and even playing a bit with him. She did want to point out that she still has the most beautiful golden eyes.
Magic has taken every thing pretty well. He has kind of ignored Misty for the most part, he was with several other kittens so the new surroundings are probably a lot more interesting then a new big sis.
although even little kittens run out of energy sooner or later. So he cuddled on Michelle's lap to take a snooze.
While Misty was giving her best Garfield pose. "Just wait until the humans are asleep then I will take care of the bundle of fur with eyes."

Misty

It has been a long hard winter here this year and even though birds have begun to migrate back and I have even seen a couple of butterflies winter has a way of continuing to return. It is very depressing. So one of the things that I do when I am depressed and sitting at home inside during a winter storm warning is play with my baby kitten Misty. I took a few pictures of her to share.
Isn't she cute.
I had to take pictures when she was sleeping because most of the rest of the time she runs around the house like a wild kitty.
Its been a long time since our last cat, who we had to put to sleep earlier this year, was a kitten, so we have had to get used to having a little ball of energy around the house.
When she sleeps though she is dead to the world.
Well if you happened to be depressed or in a bad mood I hope that this has cheered you up. I know it has made me smile just writing the post. But now this morning the sun has finally come back out so it is time for me to get out and do some birding.

New Edition to the Family

Last weekend Michelle and I decided to check out an adoption day event that was being held at a local Petco by a rescue organisation called Last Hope. It had only been a few days since we had to say goodbye to our first child puddy, but neither of us could stand living in our house with out the pitter patter of little paws. Michelle really wanted a kitten so we arrived early, since we figured any kittens that they had for adoption would probably go quickly, but when we got there all that we saw were adult cats. There were still some cages empty so we decided to ask someone from Last Hope if they knew if there were going to be any kittens at the event. Last Hope was holding another event at a Petsmart not far away that was starting 30 minutes later, so we were planning to run there if they were not going to have any kittens at the Petco. As Michelle walked over to a volunteer a woman walked in with a carrying case holding 3 kittens. I called Michelle back and when a woman and her son asked if they could hold 2 of the kittens Michelle asked if we could hold the remaining one. That was all it took.
We never put her back down. Michelle filled out the paperwork while I held our new precious baby. Then we purchased all new supplies for her, since we decided that it was best to through out all of Puddy's old stuff and start fresh.
She really did not like the ride home, she cried most of the way, and when we got home she ran and hid under our couch, after we got her out we blocked the couch with an old curtain rod box that we had. It did not take long for us to beginning to bond with her and by the next day she was no longer hiding from us.
She and her siblings had been found alone outside and had been rescued and placed into foster care with Last Hope. Her foster mother named her Hidey because she was cautious and hid with her at first too. We were not that crazy about the name though and so after going through several good choices we decided to call her Misty. Misty is a gorgeous gray tabby with beautiful eyes which are almost orange in the light. She is 17 weeks old and according to our vet, who we visited yesterday, looks to be in good health. We will have to go back to the vet in a couple of weeks for her distemper booster and rabies shot and then next month for spaying and to have her front claws removed. She will have to stay over night for the spaying and will probably not be happy but it is part of the adoption agreement to have her spayed before 7 months old.

I actually would like to have 2 cats but I still need to convince Michelle that it is a good idea. Right now we are both just very happy to have Misty in our life. She is very cute and I am sure that you will see a lot more of her in the future.
